ZONTA CLUB OF CAMBRIDGE DECLARES AMAZING RACE AN AMAZING DAY!

Race Day has come and gone, and although there were many hot and weary racers and volunteers, the Zonta Club of Cambridge declares the event a success!

On Saturday, June 18th the Zonta Club of Cambridge hosted 60 participants, ranging in age from 9 to 73, as they followed clues and completed challenges across Cambridge. The event was held to benefit the Langs Farm Village Association’s “Growing It Forward Brick By Brick” Capital Campaign. A donation of over $3,200 will be made to the Campaign.

“The Club was committed to making the race as authentic and true to the TV show as possible. The course and challenges were kept top secret throughout the planning process, with only the Amazing Race Canada event co-ordinator and one Zonta Club member privy to the final decisions on all aspects of the race,” says Event Co-Chair Anne Mason. “We are so excited about this event, that we’ve even set the date for next year – Saturday, June 9, 2012 – and started planning the route and challenges.”

The event was sponsored by Faisal Susiwala, Twin City Realty, RenFran Galt Holdings, Wayne Near Enterprises, and Riomma Technical Services.

Special thanks to Gallery M and Toy Soup (Southworks) for allowing participants to invade their businesses for some of the challenges.

Race Recap

Teams began the race St. Michael’s School on Concession Rd., across from the new Langs building. They received their first clue of the day and once they had figured out how to open the clue, they were on their way.

The first heat of racers line up ready to get their first clue.

Team R2K2 (Ron Eitzen, Kathy Decker-Eitzen, Karolyn Moore and Randy Barkhouse) struggle to open the first clue.

Checkpoint 1 took them to the Sculpture Gardens on Grand Ave. where they received their challenge clue that directed them to Toy Soup in the Southworks Outlet Mall. The challenge here was to put together a 9 piece (3x3) puzzle…harder than it sounds! Once completed, they received their clue to the next checkpoint.

Checkpoint 2 had them racing up to Centennial Park at the top of Main St. The challenge here was another puzzle with some running up and down the stairs to find the puzzle pieces.

Moving on to Checkpoint 3 took them back into the downtown area. Amid the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party they found our checkpoint volunteers and were given a clue directing them to Gallery M. Much to the amusement of our checkpoint volunteers, there was some confusion as team members raced into City Hall or the Arts Centre looking for Gallery M, when all they needed to do was look across the street and pay a visit to Cambridge’s newest art gallery. Two team members stayed outside, while the other two went inside to “memorize” a specific painting. When they came out, they had to use words only to describe the painting so that the other two members could draw a picture that resembled the painting. Once the drawing satisfied the checkpoint volunteer’s checklist, they were given another clue.

Dr. Chris Dissanayke and BJ O’Brien from the Langs Team memorize a painting inside Gallery M.

Suria and Paul Runstedler listen and sketch while teammates Maddox Runstedler and Danielle Sefton, not shown, describe the painting they saw in Gallery M.

Checkpoint 4 was in Riverside Park where teams were introduced to a more physical challenge. Each team member had to try to throw two golf balls attached by a rope so that they landed on an assembly of piping to score 6 points. Not as easy as it looked, as they had to make sure not to knock off any of the other balls, otherwise they’d have to start over again.

Checkpoint 5 was at the cenotaph in Preston and participants were given a final puzzle to solve.

60 hot and weary participants made the final leg of their journey that brought them back to Langs Farm Village Association for the awards presentation and a BBQ.
